Gytha is stunningly beautiful and must marry the heir to Saitum Manor, who is Thayer (the Red Devil named for his red hair and fierce tempter- which turned out not so fierce). Thayer is considered ugly, this is not a scarred-hero story. Thayer is just ugly and Gytha is immediately smitten with him when she meets him. Thayer is scared of Gytha because he once had his heart broken by a well-bred lady when she cheated on him, so he is scared to trust. He spends the WHOLE book waiting from Gytha to

Yeah, I know. The title made me cringe, too. Seems like this theme has been done to death because it has. Anyway, so here's Howell's version: Gytha, a famously beautiful young woman, was betrothed at birth to the heir of Saitun Manor. Seems people were croaking all over the place in those days, so rather than betroth her to a particular boy, her father deemed it safer to just betroth her to "the heir" whoever that might end up being. For most of Gytha's life, that was William, a decent,

Set in the 1300's. Gytha is betrothed to the handsome William, but when he unexpectedly dies shortly before their wedding, she has to marry Thayer, the next heir to the estate. Thayer had a heartbreak in the past and is dismayed at the thought of marrying a beauty like Gytha who will definitely cheat on him. Although he's a very well-respected warrior, he is deeply insecure about his looks and Gytha's feelings for him and his distrust threatens to permanently damage their relationship, despite

An enjoyable enough historical romance, without being particularly original or exciting. It's plain to see I picked this book up drawn by the promise of some kind of beauty and the beast retelling , but I must say I was disappointed.I was expecting Thayer, the hero, to be a battle-scarred, cold-hearted, ruthless warrior, but when push came to shove, he really wasn't.He was surprisingly soft and sweet, albeit in a rough way. Sure, he had trust issues and he was scarred, both in and outside, since

It's that time of year again: I'm at my parents', I've run out of books, and I'm going through a relative's attic library. This book is a fairly typical historical romance novel, complete with BIG MISUNDERSTANDINGs, DEVASTATING TWISTS, and LACK OF COMMUNICATION. The big unique thing in this book is supposed to be that instead of a charming, womanizing rogue, the hero is a somewhat deformed, ugly man with no self-esteem around women. There are two problems with this:1. This is not terribly unique

I adored the concept of this book and I started to read it with high hopes but I couldn't get into it. I also felt like there was nothing keeping me in the story. Once the wedding happened it just seemed like that was it. This book just didn't work for me. This is my first Hannah Howell novel. I was looking for a new Highland romance author--someone who is already established, because God knows I'm sick of reading mediocre books. In any event, when I spotted this Hannah Howell book for just .63 cents, I was elated. At the time of purchase I thought this was a Highland romance. Turns out it's an English-set medieval romance. I love that genre as much as I do Highland romance, so I was not the least bit upset at the discovery.Overall I enjoyed the
