Just as the dust from the case of the White Bulldog begins to settle in the small Russian town of Zavolzhsk, its sleepy rural existence is shaken up once again by the arrival of a desperately frightened monk who seeks the help of the bishop, Mitrofanii.

The monks have been troubled by visions of a dark, hooded figure that appears to walk on the waters of the vast Blue Lake surrounding their monastery. Sceptical of ghost stories, Mitrofanii sends first his clever young ward, then two of his most trusted advisors, to investigate the mystery. All meet with unexpected fates.

Finally Sister Pelagia takes matters into her own hands and, adopting a number of ingenious disguises, she ventures across the Blue Lake in search of answers. As she delves deeper into the layers of secrecy that cloak the islanders, and as the body count continues to rise, Pelagia begins to realise that an encounter with a ghost may be the least of her problems...

Evaluate Appertaining To Books Pelagia and the Black Monk (Sister Pelagia Mysteries #2)

Took a very long time to read this book, and by the end I was just ready for it to be over.First part contains only token appearances by our heroine, who enters directly after three others have failed to solve the mystery themselves. I put down the book at that point, returning much later to see whether that would help get things flowing? Not really. A lot of nosing around at the site, but not really getting anywhere. Clever, action-packed conclusion wasn't really a lot of payoff, sad to say.

A good storyEnjoyed this mystery that evoked images from Dostoyevsky's Russia. I'm looking forward to reading more by this author. I recommend it.

I liked this one a lot less than the first book, Pelagia and the White Bulldog. Sister Pelagia doesn't do much except for sit around and look anxious for the first 200 pages or so. Once she starts investigating the mystery and gets actively involved, then the narrative picks up and becomes fun and exciting to read. I still adore her character and wish that the first 200 pages had more action for her character. Akunin's clever and humorous writing does show through the translation.

Set in late 19th century Russia. Pelagia and the Black Monk is about strange goings-on in the monastery of New Ararat (as I read, it is based on the Solovetsky monastery in the White Sea, in this book referred to as the Blue Lake). While there are some references, criticism and descriptions of the Orthodox Church under the Tsars, The main issue of the book is the, to some extent, absurd, witty and considerably complicated plot. There probably is some satire about the influence of capitalism on



just as good as the best Fandorin novels. It oozes mystery, with layer after layer of plot and never a dull moment around. It is just a bit reactionary though

Maybe it's better if you're Russian.
