Representaion To Books Torture the Artist
Vincent Spinetti is an archetypal tortured artist ? a sensitive young writer who falls victim to alienation, parental neglect, poverty, depression, alcoholism, illness, nervous breakdowns, and unrequited love. He is painfully unaware that these torments are due to the secret manipulations of New Renaissance, an experimental organization that is testing the age-old idea that art results from suffering. Since culture is so significantly influenced by music, movies, and television, New Renaissance hopes to improve the mindless mainstream by raising writers who emphasize artistic quality over commerce. As part of its top-secret sub-project, New Renaissance hires reluctant ex-musician Harlan Eiffler to manipulate its most promising prodigy, Vincent. Wickedly antisocial and deeply disgusted by what passes for entertainment in the twenty-first century, Harlan clandestinely pulls the strings so that Vincent remains a true artist. All the while, he poses as Vincent's manager, simultaneously nurturing his prolific career and torturing his soul.Rating Regarding Books Torture the Artist

Powerful, dark, and creative. It's hard to categorize this book, so I'm just putting it into dark fiction. This is my first book by this author and I was impressed by the pacing, prose, and voice in this story. It takes a lot of unexpected turns, but all of it makes sense and works. Highly recommended.Powerful, dark, and creative. It's hard to categorize this book, so I'm just putting it into dark fiction. i want Vincent for myself...

The premise of Goebel's latest venture is inherently strange. Torture the Artist (MacAdam/Cage, 2004) follows "the age-old idea that true art can only result from suffering. When experimental Hollywood organization New Renaissance hires ex-musician Harlan Eiffler to secretly torture its most promising prodigy, Vincent Spinetti, Vincent endures depression, unrequited love, and illness, all for the sake of producing great art." The preceding quotation was lifted from the back of the book and
This book is a fricken' masterpiece!First of all the premise is absolutely brilliant, and a little twisted, ...but the writing is so flipping funny while being truthful and deep at the same time, it's just perfect .This guy reminds me of Kurt Vonnegut Jr.in the above mentioned sense, but also the story came in these short sections, each time ending on something funny, that propels one further into the book wanting to see where it goes,...This is highly recommended!
I got this book on Sunday, and I could not put it down.I think it is a record for me, as I read it ina day and a half. It's not a super long novel, but it generally takes me a few weeks. Anyway, the book was extremely interesting. It made some valid points about the state of the entertainment industry. And how it is basically a piece of crap. It also asks the question, do you really have to suffer in order to be a great artist? A huge corporation decides it wants to change the state of the
My top favourite book to date. The torture, the pain, the grief of Vincent. It all fits. It's me through and through and I love the style of the writing. I can identify myself within it. I've read this book so many times I know it by heart.
