McCullough's sixth book in the "Masters of Rome" series brings us to the most well-known event of Ancient Rome--the assassination of Julius Caesar. The book details events leading up to the event, as a group of "liberators" plot his downfall. The group includes Cassius and Brutus, son of Caesar's mistress Servilia. The book also describes the aftermath of the assassination, including Octavian's rise to power, his partnership with Mark Anthony and Lepidus, and the ultimate defeat of the army ledThis is the greatest series ever written of Ancient Rome. Every book is unbelievable! The October Horse is no exception. The book takes you through Caesar's tenure as dictator, through his assassination and the Civil Wars of Octavian and Marc Antony. I am only saddened is that there is the last book of the series left. I have tried to stretch out in between the novels to stretch out the series as long as possible but finally I come to the last which of course is "Antony and Cleopatra"....BUT I
This is the sixth novel in McCullough's Masters of Rome series, which has been quite a ride. McCullough's prose isn't particularly distinguished, and I've sometimes felt some judicious, nay extensive, cutting would have done wonders for the pacing of these doorstop novels. The reader gets the non-fiction, the real characters set in the author's personal creative landscape where she recreates the characters and invents a few fictional ones in a setting that could make this a compelling read. You will meet the young Octavian who changes dramatically into this new person after his adoptive father's (Julius Caesar) death. The October Horse is an engaging read filled with Roman politics, warfare, treason and plotting (against Julius Caesar). Though its part of a series, I highly enjoyed it as it was and its remarkable how Collen McCullough made Ancient Rome and the famous city of Alexandria come back to life.If you love Ancient history, give this book or the entire series a try. I will definitely read more of it.
This sixth volume covers the tail end of the Pompeian war and Caesars brief period of unchallenged power in Rome. I enjoyed it more than the previous three in the series, mainly because McCullough eases up a bit on Caesar as the cocky golden boy surrounded by malignant idiots. They get him here, right enough, but first she finally succeeds in humanising her hero and making him sympathetic.
