(For my Novels and Literature Class: multiple books by the same author)Ever since I received this box set for Christmas one year, this has been one of my favorite book series, which lead me to explore some of Tamora Pierces other books and loving those too. I love the magic system and wonderful characters she creates in her Tortall universe, and I cant seem to get enough of Alanna and her knightly shenanigans and adventures. The theme of accepting yourself is prevalent throughout, as AlannaI really like this series. It is full of interesting characters, adventure, love, etc. Tamora Pierce created a fascinating world. And this story sets the basis for the other series in this world. I enjoyed rereading this series. Now on to reread more of her books. I read these books when I was a kid, or at least the first two because that was all the library had. Cross-dressing to become a knight, boyfriends, horses, it was about all my 11 year old self could handle. I checked them out over and over thinking they were pretty risque, (she mentions her period). I wanted to read them again to see if they were as good as I remember, and to find out the end of the story that I have hung onto for 20 years.The answer is yes and no. They aren't quite as thick and
I love this series and probably always will. I grew up with mild dyslexia, and struggled to read anything until I found these books around 11 or 12. For the first time, I'd found a story that was fun and exciting enough to make me push past my reading difficulties. I love Alanna as a protagonist: she's tough, fiery, and determined not to be constrained by her gender role. But she's also flawed, vulnerable, and works hard for everything she achieves. I actually read The Imortalls and went back and read everything in order when I was a teen. I would recommend reading them in the correct order... I have owned three different editions of this series... my first i wore through the spines. The second I found the original printed copies at a thrift store, I LOVE the original artwork.
