The author creates a beautiful story where she presents her family and how it evolved in time. The most amazing thing is how they manage to stay united and to navigate through life together, for better and for worse. For me, reading this book was a reminder that love, understanding and truth are the key ingredients for every family.Another memoir. It's a bit of a slough though I did enjoy many parts and have adopted a bit of advice she was once given by an analyst:"Stay in your own trench." (this in regards to the whole blended family/stepchildren scenario.)I can see why certain members have requested that she NOT include them in her books. I would opt out if I were in her clan. (not of BEING in her clan, but of being written about/exposed.)
I enjoyed this memoir of the author's life much more than I did Ines of My Soul. It "reads" like a Fiction novel. I listened to this as a Book on CD, and the narrator is fantastic. It had good pacing, and she captured the voice of a Chilean woman and other characters of different nationalities within the story.

Though this book contains very much sadness it is a fine read. Following the death of her daughter this is written as if to the child she misses most desperately. Although living in a tribe of her own making - with some colourful characters - Isabel Allende has many obstacles to her happiness.
I couldn't finish this book which I was required to read for book club. Some of the chapters were interesting anecdotes, but generally it felt like looking at the holiday photos of people I didn't know. It was a huge struggle to read the first half and I couldn't continue beyond that. :(
Allende writes to her deceased daughter, giving updates on what has happened in their family since her death. It was hard to get started though, especially since she opens the book describing how she decided to write it because she couldn't think of anything else to write. Allende seems like a sweet mother but I was offended at times by the way she uses stereotypes as descriptors ("...like an Amazon"). I found her to be much more engaging on a recent radio interview describing her latest novel,
Isabel Allende's memoir is a conversation with her daughter Paula, who she lost years before to a hereditary disease. Allende lives in a huge tribe of a family that includes step-children, grandchildren, a Buddhist lesbian couple, and her extended family from Chile. Allende presents herself warts and all, as the mother-in-law from hell. At times, her actions make perfect sense to me and other times I can't believe how much she interferes. I forgive her for most of her faults, but there are some
