My mother is a professor in special education. All my life, I heard about children with mental and physical disabilities, children with down syndrome, dysfunctional children etc. I know enough. I've heard enough. I've see enough. What always surprised me was my mother's attitude towards these children and how she never treated them like there was anything wrong with them. I always wondered how she did it, since watching them always brought tears to my eyes. I've seen a lot of parents too. ButJean-Louis Fournier (a French humorist)has written this book as a letter of apology to his two sons, Mathieu and Thomas, both born disabled. It seems this book has offended readers when it first came out, calling it an obscene and a heartless Book! I guess it's the way one look at the topic. If you want bunch of lies about how "I love God and world for giving me disabled children who will not experience anything other children would... etc etc" well, then, this isn't the book. Personally I
Horrible human nature. Altough it is natural and everyone can understand, the cry for help is real.

It takes a lot of courage to write such a book and it takes a lot of talent to make it that good.
I just couldn't finish this book. I don't pretend to understand what the author has been through, but boy, if you have nothing whatsoever positive to say, why say anything?I only got to page nineteen. Maybe it got better after that, but I couldn't bear another hundred+ pages of this book. I get that this was a difficult situation. I do. But, wow. I don't have a special needs child (or two like this man), but I do have two special needs nephews and in my experience, yes, life can be very
A short, quick read composed as a letter to his two sons that will never be read by them and written in short and powerful vignettes. Jean-Louis Fournier has two sons who are mentally and physically handicapped. This book is darkly humorous and also oftentimes very touching and poignant. There are also uncomfortable moments. Fournier doesn't skirt around what it's like to have developmentally stalled children: it can be downright frustrating, he relates, and he gets impatient and angry and
I read this book for a group of French literature and with the assumption that it was a memoir.I had found Fourniers account of his two disabled sons honest albeit sometimes brutal. There was dark humour, frustration, anger, and terrible feelings and thoughts shared by the author unashamedly. Then I learnt that this book is, in fact, more along the lines of a novel rather than a memoir.Although its true that Fournier had two disabled sons, many of the anecdotes and descriptions he gives about his
